Slaithwaite is a town in Kirklees, West Yorkshire approximately 5 miles southwest of Huddersfield.
The church of St James is elevated above ground and was built circa 1789. This replaced the original flood damaged church.
On alternating years, Slaithwaite celebrates the Moonraking Festival. This weeklong celebration during the school half term comprises of lantern making and storytelling. It culminates with the lanterns being paraded around the town.
Slaithwaite also boasts its own Philharmonic Orchestra which was founded back in 1891. It is an amateur orchestra comprising of 80 musicians and their instruments. They hold concerts in Huddersfield annually. They have a Brass Band also which formed back in 1892, and they can be seen performing numerous concerts throughout the year. They are proud to report they were also the first band to gain the Grand Shield twice.
