As we edge ever so closer to the 25th - Christmas festivities are in full swing!
Christmas is a time spent with loved ones, playing games, eating delicious food, and consuming lots of chocolate (guilt free!). In the run up to Christmas we urge you to be mindful and responsible…electrically speaking.
Why is electrical safety important?
Electrical safety is important every day of year and should not be overlooked just because it's Christmas. Being responsible will reduce the risk of accidents, after all the last thing anyone wants is a trip to A&E over Christmas. To stay safe over the holiday season all you need to do is follow our top tips…
Use extension leads safely
Many of us will require an extension lead to power lights on our Christmas trees and other festive decorations. Extension leads are a short-term solution – they can easily overheat if overloaded and if not properly tucked away can be a huge trip hazard. You should never double up and always double check for damage before use. Lastly never run them beneath rugs and use cable protectors if necessary.
Christmas lights
For many of us Christmas lights are a huge part of Christmas – they bring joy and create the perfect cosy setting to sit down and watch a classic Christmas film. However, even Christmas lights can be pose a danger if used irresponsibly. When using outdoor lights make sure they are weatherproof and have an IP ratting of at least 44, 65 if possible. The higher the number the better protection against the elements. When illuminating your tree inside opt for LED indoor lights, they are much less likely to overheat.
Real Christmas trees
Have you opted for a real Christmas tree? If so, be mindful they can catch fire much easier than artificial trees. To limit fire risks, position your tree well away from any heat source and keep them well watered.
Christmas dinner
Cooking a Christmas dinner is always stressful. There’s a lot of preparation involved and plating up everyone’s meal at the same time is a challenge. When cooking be sure to keep the hob area clear and free from any flammables like tea towels. Before the big day rolls around you should test your smoke and heat alarms just in case.
