With home rewiring one of the biggest electrical jobs required, questions regarding the job always arise.
To help our customers understand the rewire process we have put together an easy to read, informative guide involving the most frequently asked questions on home rewiring.
What is a home rewire & what’s involved?
To put it as simply as possible, a home rewire involves replacing an upgrading all the current wiring and systems used within your home. This will include your Fuse-box, sockets, switches, and all wiring. The reason a rewire is required is normally due to old, faulty electrics that haven’t been replaced for many years. Rewires may also be needed for major home renovation such as an extension.
Does my home need rewiring?
A rewire is recommended every 25 years. With the average age of houses in the UK being 37 years old, rewires are more common than people think.
If I think my home needs rewiring, what should I do?
We advise all our customers to call us for an initial inspection known as an EICR. This will officially determine whether your home needs a rewire. It will also allow us to better understand your electrical system, so we know exactly what we are dealing with when planning the works.
How long will a rewire take?
With home rewiring being a complex job, you can expect it to be fully completed within a week. Hopefully less! This will depend on a few factors like property size and whether it’s a ‘lived in’ or ‘empty’ rewire.
Can I make additions / alterations during the rewire?
Yes, the best part of rewiring your home is being able to personalise it accordingly. We can add in extra sockets and switches where you most need them making everyday life that little bit easier.
How disruptive is home rewiring?
We would be lying to you if we said it wasn’t messy or disruptive, unfortunately due to the nature of the job, rewiring is disruptive. We need access behind walls and underneath floorboards; mess and disruption are inevitable. However, there are things we can do to limit this as much as possible. Please don’t let this put you off if rewiring is urgent, out-dated, and poor electrics can be very dangerous.
